  1. Cut about 1/2 inch off the top and bottom of the onion, peel it, and cut a 1-inch-wide core out of the middle.
  2. Use a large knife to make 1/2 inch cuts around the outside of the onion, making sure not to cut through the bottom.
  3. In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
  4. Dip the onion into the milk mixture, making sure it's fully coated, and then into the flour mixture, making sure to get it into all the crevices.
  5. Let the onion sit for 10 minutes to allow the coating to set.
  6. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully lower the onion into the hot oil, cut side down. Fry for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. Remove the onion from the oil and let it drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  9. Serve the bloomin' onion with your favorite dipping sauce.
