The first chocolate chip cookie was created by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938, when she added chopped up bits from a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar into a cookie recipe.

  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing well.
  6. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  7. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto ungreased baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
