  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  4. Spread half of the batter into the prepared baking pan. Top with a layer of sliced apples.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts. Sprinkle half of this mixture over the apples.
  6. Spread the remaining batter over the apple layer and sprinkle the remaining brown sugar mixture on top.
