Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a round baking pan.

In a large bowl, mix together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Spread half of the batter into the prepared baking pan. Top with a layer of sliced apples.

In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts. Sprinkle half of this mixture over the apples.

Spread the remaining batter over the apple layer and sprinkle the remaining brown sugar mixture on top.

Bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove it from the pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack.
