Thumbprint cookies are called so because you make an indentation in the center of each cookie with your thumb before baking.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on a baking sheet.

Use your thumb to make an indentation in the center of each cookie.

Fill each indentation with a teaspoon of jam or preserves.

Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
