Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Mash the ripe bananas in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the mashed bananas. In another bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture and mix well. Stir in the vanilla extract and chopped walnuts. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan. Bake for 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and serve.
