French onion soup is believed to have originated in France in the 18th century and was traditionally a popular dish among the working class due to its simple and affordable ingredients.

Heat butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, stirring occasionally.

Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir until well coated.

Gradually add beef broth and white wine, stirring constantly.

Add bay leaf, thyme, salt, and black pepper.

Reduce heat to low and let the soup simmer for about 45 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls.

Top each bowl with a slice of French baguette and sprinkle with grated Gruyere cheese.

Place the bowls on a baking sheet and bake in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
