Twinkies were originally filled with banana cream, but due to a banana shortage during World War II, the filling was changed to vanilla cream.

This is vegetarian recipe. Dish can be prepared in 105 minutes. Recipe requires some culinary experience (medium difficulty). Number of ingredients: 13.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a twinkie pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the whole milk.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared twinkie pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the twinkies to cool completely in the pan.
  9. In a small bowl, combine the marshmallow creme, powdered sugar, vegetable shortening, vanilla extract, and salt to make the filling.
  10. Once the twinkies have cooled, remove them from the pan and use a piping bag or a ziplock bag with the corner snipped off to fill each twinkie with the marshmallow filling.
