French Onion Soup is believed to have originated in the 18th century in France and was traditionally served to the poor as a cheap and filling meal.

Slice the onions thinly.

Heat butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Add the onions and cook until caramelized, stirring occasionally.

Add garlic, thyme, and bay leaves, and cook for another minute.

Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well.

Pour in the beef broth and white wine, and bring to a simmer.

Reduce the heat to low and let the soup simmer for about 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Slice the baguette and toast it in the oven until crispy.

Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls and top each with a slice of toasted baguette.
