Classic Baltimore Berger Cookies
Berger Cookies, famous for their thick chocolate icing, have been a Baltimore tradition since the early 1900s. The recipe was brought to Baltimore by German immigrants and has remained a beloved local treat ever since.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk.

Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a baking sheet, leaving space between each cookie. Flatten each dough ball slightly with the back of a spoon.

Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on a wire rack.

To make the chocolate icing, melt the chocolate and butter together in a microwave-safe bowl. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract. Gradually whisk in the powdered sugar until smooth.

Once the cookies have cooled, spread a generous amount of chocolate icing on top of each cookie.
