Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she added chopped up bits from a Nestle semi-sweet chocolate bar into a cookie recipe.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix well.
  5. Stir in the chocolate chips and chopped nuts (if using).
  6. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto ungreased baking sheets.
  7. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until set.
  8. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
