Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing well after each addition.

Spread half of the batter into the prepared baking dish. Top with cherries, chocolate chips, and chopped nuts (if using). Spread the remaining batter over the top.

Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Allow to cool in the baking dish for 30 minutes before cutting into bars.
