Cheddar Cheese Pretzel Bread
Pretzels originated in Europe and were traditionally associated with fasting during Lent.

Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.

Cut butter into small pieces and mix into the flour mixture.

Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms.

Allow the dough to rest for 10 minutes.

Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a rope shape.

Fold each rope in half and twist the two halves together, forming a pretzel shape.

In a large saucepan, bring the water and baking soda to a boil.

Carefully place each pretzel in the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.

Brush the pretzels with beaten egg yolk.

Sprinkle the cheddar cheese on top of the pretzels.

Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Allow the pretzel bread to cool slightly before serving.
