Banana bread became popular in the United States during the Great Depression as a way to use overripe bananas.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the bananas with a fork.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, mix the melted butter and sugar until well combined. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, stirring until just combined.
  6. Fold in the mashed bananas and chopped nuts.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  8. Bake for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 15 minutes.
  10. Transfer the bread to a wire rack and let it cool completely before slicing and serving.
