Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the milk until the frosting is smooth and spreadable.
  9. Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost the top of one cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  10. Decorate with sprinkles if desired. Allow the cake to rest for at least 1 hour before serving.
