  2. In a bowl, combine the dates, boiling water, and baking soda. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and dark brown sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the date mixture. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the batter into the greased baking dish and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. While the pudding is baking, prepare the toffee sauce. In a saucepan, heat the double cream and demerara sugar over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture has thickened slightly.
