Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a round cake pan.

Peel and core the apples, then slice them into thin wedges.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk, until just blended.

Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Arrange the apple slices on top, then drizzle with caramel sauce. Sprinkle with chopped nuts if desired.
