Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Layer vanilla wafers and sliced bananas in a baking dish.

In a saucepan, combine sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually stir in milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks. Gradually whisk in the hot milk mixture.

Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

Pour the custard mixture over the wafers and bananas in the baking dish.
