Pupusas are considered the national dish of El Salvador and are enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

In a mixing bowl, combine masa harina, water, and salt. Knead until a soft dough forms.

Divide the dough into small balls. Flatten each ball and fill with a spoonful of refried beans, cheese, and your choice of meat and onions.

Fold the dough over the filling and seal the edges.

Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the pupusas for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

Serve hot with salsa or curtido (pickled cabbage salad).
