  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the egg mixture.
  4. Mix until a soft dough forms, then add the butter and continue mixing until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
  7. Roll the dough out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch and cut out circles using a cookie cutter or glass.
  8. Place a small spoonful of jelly or jam in the center of half the circles.
  9. Moisten the edges of the jelly-filled circles with a little water and place another dough circle on top, pressing the edges together to seal.
  10. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot.
  11. Carefully add the doughnuts to the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  12. Remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  13. Dust the doughnuts with powdered sugar before serving.
