Hungarian Christmas Bread, also known as ‘Beigli’, is a traditional pastry filled with either poppy seeds or walnuts. It is commonly served during the Christmas season in Hungary.

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar in warm milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg yolks to the dry ingredients. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and knead in the raisins and candied citrus peel.
  7. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake the bread for 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
  11. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
