  1. Grate the cheddar cheese and gruyere cheese.
  2. Rub the inside of a fondue pot with garlic.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the white wine over medium heat.
  4. Gradually add the grated cheeses, stirring constantly until melted and smooth.
  5. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with lemon juice until smooth.
  6. Add the cornstarch mixture to the cheese mixture and stir until thickened.
  7. Stir in nutmeg and black pepper.
  8. Transfer the cheese mixture to the fondue pot.
  9. Cut the French bread into bite-sized cubes.
  10. Serve the fondue with the bread cubes.
