Gingersnaps are believed to have originated in Europe and were brought to America by early settlers. They were originally called ‘gingerbread nuts’ and were made with molasses and ginger.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and molasses.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until well combined.
  4. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and roll each ball in granulated sugar. Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are slightly soft. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
