  1. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the vanilla extract and salt, and mix until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the flour, mixing until the dough comes together.
  4. If desired, stir in the chopped nuts.
  5. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and unwrap. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each disk into a 9-inch circle.
  8. Cut each circle into 12 wedges.
  9. Starting from the wide end, roll up each wedge to form a crescent shape.
  10. Place the crescent cookies on the prepared baking sheet.
  11. Bake for 12 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  12. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
