Gingerbread has a long history dating back to ancient Greece and Egypt. It became popular in Europe during the Middle Ages and was often shaped into elaborate designs and used as decorations.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x9 inch baking pan.

In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and baking soda.

In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with boiling water. Mix well after each addition.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the gingerbread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from the pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack.
