Ingredients
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
-
Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add it to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
-
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
-
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. If desired, fold in any optional add-ins.
-
Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Be careful not to overwork the dough.
-
Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch (5 cm) thick. Use a round cookie cutter or glass to cut out scones.
-
Place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with a little milk or beaten egg for a golden finish.
-
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the scones are golden brown.
-
Remove from the oven and let the scones cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before serving.
