  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar until well combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan.
  3. Arrange the pitted cherries on top of the butter-sugar mixture in a single layer.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In a separate large bowl, beat the granulated sugar and egg until light and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the sugar-egg mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
  7. Pour the batter over the cherries in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  10. Place a serving plate upside down on top of the cake pan. Carefully flip the pan and plate together to release the cake onto the plate.
