The first brownie recipe appeared in a cookbook in 1906 and was named after its inventor, Bertha Palmer, who was the wife of the owner of the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x9-inch baking pan.

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

Layer the dry ingredients in a 1-quart mason jar in the following order: all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and chopped walnuts.

Close the jar tightly with a lid.

Attach a label with the following instructions: 'To make the brownies, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, combine the contents of this jar with 3/4 cup melted butter and 3 beaten eggs. Mix until well combined. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.'
