In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the sour cream. Mix until just combined.

Spread half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Spoon the cherry pie filling over the batter, spreading it evenly. Top with the remaining batter.
