Banana bread became popular during the Great Depression in the 1930s when resourceful home cooks looked for ways to use overripe bananas instead of wasting them.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork.
  3. Add the melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the bowl. Mix well.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture, stirring until just combined.
  6. If desired, fold in chopped nuts.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the banana bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  10. Transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
