In a large pot, sauté the onion, garlic, and bell pepper until softened.

Add the kidney beans, tomato paste, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, salt, pepper, and water to the pot.

Stir well and bring to a simmer.

Cover the pot and let it simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
