The first chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938, when she ran out of baker’s chocolate and substituted it with chopped up chocolate in her cookie dough.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix well.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Fold in the chocolate chips.

Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are slightly soft.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
