The first chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she added chopped chocolate to her cookie dough, expecting it to melt and create an all-chocolate cookie. Instead, the chocolate pieces retained their shape, creating the iconic chocolate chip cookie we know today.
