Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pan.

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually mix in the dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk. Fold in the dried fruit, nuts, and brandy or rum.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 75-90 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once cooled, wrap the fruitcake in plastic wrap and let it rest at room temperature for at least 2 hours, or overnight, before serving.
