  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the tart cherries, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Stir well to coat the cherries evenly.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut the unsalted butter into small pieces and add it to the dry ingredients. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Add the milk and vanilla extract to the flour mixture. Stir until just combined.
