Stuffing, also known as dressing, has been a traditional part of Thanksgiving meals since the 19th century. It is believed to have originated from the ancient Roman dish called ‘farce’, which was a mixture of meats, nuts, and spices.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cut the bread into cubes and spread them on a baking sheet. Toast in the preheated oven until lightly browned, about 10 minutes.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and celery, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, cooked onion and celery, chicken or vegetable broth, parsley, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
  6. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to allow the top to brown.
  7. Let the stuffing rest for 10 minutes before serving.
