In a large bowl, mix together the dried mixed fruit, breadcrumbs, plain flour, vegetable suet, dark brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground ginger, and salt.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, brandy, melted butter, golden syrup, lemon zest, and orange zest.

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring well to combine.

Grease a pudding basin and spoon the pudding mixture into it. Cover with a double layer of greased baking parchment and secure with string.

Place the pudding basin in a steamer set over a pan of simmering water. Steam for 3 hours, topping up the water as necessary.

Remove the pudding from the steamer and allow it to rest for 30 minutes before turning it out onto a serving plate.
