Semlor are traditionally eaten on Fat Tuesday (Shrove Tuesday) in Sweden, but they are also popular throughout the Lenten season.

This is vegetarian recipe. Dish can be prepared in 75 minutes. Recipe requires some culinary experience (medium difficulty). Number of ingredients: 12.

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, milk, melted butter, cardamom, salt, and egg. Mix until a smooth dough forms.
  2. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  4. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
  5. Place the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool completely.
  8. Cut off the top of each bun and set aside. Scoop out some of the center to create a hollow.
  9. In a bowl, combine almond paste and vanilla extract. Fill each bun with the almond paste mixture.
  10. Whip the cream until stiff peaks form. Pipe or spoon the whipped cream on top of the almond paste.
  11. Place the top of each bun back on and dust with powdered sugar.
  12. Serve and enjoy!
