Spread butter on both sides of each bread slice.

Layer half of the bread slices in the baking dish.

In a pan, sauté onions and garlic until translucent. Add spinach and cook until wilted.

Spread half of the spinach mixture over the bread slices.

Sprinkle half of the cheese over the spinach mixture.

Repeat the layers with the remaining bread slices, spinach mixture, and cheese.

In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

Pour the egg mixture over the bread and cheese layers.

Press the bread with a fork to make sure it absorbs the liquid.

Let it rest for 10 minutes.
