Thumbprint cookies are believed to have originated in Sweden and are called ‘Hallongrotta’ which means ‘raspberry cave’ in Swedish.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt, and mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the flour and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Use your thumb or the back of a teaspoon to make an indentation in the center of each cookie.
  7. Fill each indentation with a teaspoon of jam or fruit preserves.
  8. Sprinkle chopped nuts on top of the cookies.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
  10. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
