Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.

Rub the inside of a baking dish with garlic cloves.

Layer the potatoes in the dish, sprinkling each layer with salt, pepper, and grated Gruyere cheese.

Pour the heavy cream over the potatoes.

Dot the top with butter.

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
