  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Peel and slice the potatoes.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the garlic until fragrant.
  4. Add the milk, thyme, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan and bring to a simmer.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a baking dish and pour half of the milk mixture over them.
  6. Sprinkle half of the grated cheddar cheese on top.
  7. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, milk mixture, and cheddar cheese.
  8. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden and the cheese is bubbly.
  10. Let the potato bake rest for 10 minutes before serving.
