  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and peppermint extract, and mix well.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms. Divide the dough in half and tint one portion with red food coloring.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough into a 12-inch (30 cm) long rope. Twist the two ropes together and shape into a candy cane shape.
  5. Place the peppermint twists on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  6. Allow the twists to cool on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Serve and enjoy!
