Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Peel and slice the onions.

In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Add the onions to the pan and cook until they are soft and golden brown.

Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well.

Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.

Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cheese until melted.

Season with salt and pepper.

Transfer the onion mixture to a casserole dish.

Sprinkle the bread crumbs over the top.

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the casserole is hot and bubbly.
