  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract, orange zest, and orange juice.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in the dried fruits, nuts, and brandy or rum.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, wrap the fruitcake in plastic wrap and let it rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour before serving.
