  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the French bread into 1-inch thick slices. Arrange the slices in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread slices, making sure all the bread is soaked.
  4. Peel and slice the apples. Arrange the apple slices on top of the bread.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples.
  6. Dot the top of the bread and apples with butter.
  7. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and let it rest in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  8. When ready to bake, remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the French toast, covered, for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread is cooked through.
