  3. Gradually add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  5. Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for 1 hour.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/2 inch and cut into squares or circles.
  8. Fry the fastnachts in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  9. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  10. Serve warm with powdered sugar or maple syrup.
