Peel and slice the yams into 1/2-inch thick rounds.

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Add the yams to the saucepan and toss to coat them in the caramel mixture.

Transfer the yams to a baking dish and pour the heavy cream over them.

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
