Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt. Set aside. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and white sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and roll in sugar. Place cookies 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned. Cool on wire racks.
