Meringue-Topped Southern Banana Pudding

Slice the bananas and set aside.

In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, cornstarch, and salt.

Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.

Remove from heat and whisk in the egg yolks, butter, and vanilla extract.

Place a layer of vanilla wafers in a baking dish.

Top with a layer of sliced bananas.

Pour half of the pudding mixture over the bananas.

Repeat the layers with the remaining vanilla wafers, bananas, and pudding.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form.

Gradually add the powdered sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
