Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a loaf pan.

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.

In another bowl, mix the applesauce, brown sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and skim milk until well combined.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Fold in the chopped apple and walnuts (if using).

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
